Madonna Louise Ciccone is an American singer, actress, writer and songwriter who was born on August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. Madonna was born in a Catholic family and grew up in the Detroit suburbs of Pontiac and Rochester hills. Madonna’s mother died of breast cancer and she was really affected by this loss. Madonna went to St. Fredrick’s and St. Andrew’s elementary schools both of which were Catholic schools. She later went to West Middle school for her early education.

Madonna went for her high school education at the Rochester Adams high school. She was a member of the school’s cheerleading group. She was a very bright student and in most of her subjects she scored A. After Madonna’s graduating from high school, she was given a scholarship to go and study dance at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance.

Initially, Madonna started as a back-up singer of other artists like Patrick Hernandez. At some point, Madonna fell in love with a musician Dan Gilroy with whom she went ahead to form her very first rock band called the Breakfast Club. While Madonna was in the band, she used to sing, play the guitar and drums. Later, she left the band and decided to go solo and made her first single debut titled “Everybody” in 1982. In 1983, she released another single called “Burning Up”. These two songs became really hot hits in American charts.

Madonna continued establishing herself in the music industry by compiling her album titled Madonna. This album was produced initially by a Warner Bros producer Reggie Lucas. Madonna disagreed with Lucas on his method of album production and decided to take another producer named Benitez. It was Benitez who did for Madonna remixes in most of the tracks of her album and even came up with a hit Holiday, which earned her global acclaim. Madonna’s success didn’t stop there as her seventh album Ray of Light enabled her to be awarded four Grammy Awards. The album was also listed by Rolling Stone in 500 Greatest Hits of All Time. The album was a hit in many countries and over 16 million copies of the album were sold worldwide. In 1998, Madonna was named by Guinness Book of World Records as the only single female artist ever to have sold so many records the world over.

Apart from singing, Madonna was involved in acting. She was a star actress in the film The Next Big Thing. She has also been involved in charity work in countries like Malawi where she used $400,000 to build ten schools for needy children.
